I found a nice place on the couch to watch some tele. And…..yes, my favourite fishing program was on. How much would I enjoy just jumping in there to the thousands of fish and eating a few of them.
But do you know…
Why do Cats like Fish?
Let me tell you a little bit about it.
The first humans, who domesticated us cats where Egyptians. Ancient Egyptians of course, at the time of the pyramids. Historical records suggest that they lured cats into their home by offering them some fish. And that’s how we developed our taste for fish. You might want to call it some sort of instinct that has developed in domesticated cats. Fish is associated with something good, home.
We Cats eat mostly meat. Why? Even though we eat plants every now and again, we cannot fully digest them. You might have realized that we throw up when we eat a lot of vegetables and plants.
Taurine is another reason why Cats like fish. We need Taurine. Taurine is an amino acid which regulates our heart rhythm, digestion, vision and reproduction. Most other mammals produce taurine by themselves, but we Cats don’t. Hence we need Taurine from a different source and Fish is one of those sources.
Then there is the Protein. Fish if one of the sources we get our protein from. However, as with everything that we and also you humans like, don’t feed us too much fish. Fish also contains high levels of mercury and other toxins. If we eat too much fish, we can get Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and hyperthyroidism. So please, even though you know that we love fish, please don’t give us this yummy meat more than twice a week. We may become ill.
Well, I hope you know now, why cats do like fish.
Now, I continue watching the TV, dreaming about tons of fish…..
